Our Derbyshire Centre is situated in Flagg near Buxton and provides permanent refuge to a small number of donkeys who are elderly or have long-term medical conditions. Other donkeys are provided with respite care until they are fit enough to travel to our main Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon, and an on-site training centre provides a choice of courses in donkey care and welfare. |

Comfort for Olga as she recovers from a broken neck
By Emma Gill - Posted on 15th September 2011
Donkeys come to our Derbyshire Centre for many reasons, some with health problems or ailments that need ongoing treatment. When 10 year old Olga arrived earlier this year with her group of Poitou donkey friends she was still recovering from fracturing her neck several months earlier. |
Donkey Summer Fair in Derbyshire

The Donkey Sanctuary's Derbyshire Centre is holding a Donkey Summer Fair in Flagg near Buxton on Sunday 18th September 2011 between 10am and 4pm. Visitors can get ‘hands on’ with the donkeys, enjoy donkey walking and grooming sessions and meet the staff, including talks and demonstrations from the vet and farrier. |
About usOur Derbyshire Centre is a small farm of around 21 acres situated just outside Buxton, bordering the Peak District National Park, with room for up to 50 donkeys. The donkeys that come into The Donkey Sanctuary’s care are unwanted or have been neglected. Others come from loving homes for a secure future due to health reasons, for companionship, or the owner's circumstances may have changed. New arrivalsOur Derbyshire Centre's main purpose is to provide respite care to donkeys that have been rescued or relinquished to the charity who are too sick to travel to our main Sanctuary in Devon. Just like Laurel, Hardy and Tim, who came into our care in July 2009 and spent many months recovering at our Derbyshire Centre. All donkeys spend six weeks in our New Arrivals unit where they are assessed by a vet and given vaccinations, farriery and worming and any intensive veterinary treatments that they may need before a decision is taken on the best home for each donkey. All our donkeys are provided with a sanctuary for life with The Donkey Sanctuary and, depending on their needs, will move to one of the Sanctuary's farms in the South West of England or be considered for our foster scheme, where young and healthy donkeys are placed with caring homes so that they can receive the individual love and attention they thrive on. A donkey who is in poor health or elderly may not be able to travel the long distance to our main Sanctuary and will therefore be given a permanent home here at the Derbyshire Centre. Currently in our care at the Derbyshire CentreWe have room for up to 50 donkeys at our Derbyshire Centre. We currently have around 22 donkeys in permanent residence, some of whom live in a group of younger donkeys, some make up a group of older donkeys and we have a small group of donkeys with respiratory difficulties. In addition to our permanent residents, we often have donkeys at our centre who are awaiting transfer to another Sanctuary farm or being prepared to join the fostering scheme. Our staff work with donkeys before they go to live in a foster setting, by preparing each donkey with a training programme so they are used to being caught and handled and are comfortable with being checked by vets and farriers.
Advice and supportOur regional welfare officers offer help and support to donkey owners throughout the area in addition to investigating reports of neglect or mistreatment. The on-site training centre provides a choice of courses in donkey care and welfare, which are free to attend. For further information about the courses available, please contact us. Donations welcomeOur Derbyshire Centre is funded entirely by donations, being part of The Donkey Sanctuary. The charity takes in an average of eight donkeys each week throughout the UK and Ireland. With an ever increasing family of donkeys, each provided with a life of expert loving care and attention, any donation, no matter how small, makes a real difference. DirectionsThe Derbyshire Centre is situated 7 miles south of Buxton on the A515 towards Ashbourne and approximately 13 miles north of Ashbourne. From Buxton take the A515 towards Ashbourne for about 6 miles. After a sharp right-hand bend you will see the Duke of York Pub on the left. Carry on for about half a mile and you will see a turning for Flag on the left-hand side. Slow down, and go past the Bull I’th Thorn Pub and then turn left immediately up a lane. The farm is about 200 yards up on the right-hand side. SatNav Ashbourne Road, Hurdlow, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 9QQ |
