Foster a donkey

Foster donkeys

Many of the donkeys taken into our care thrive on individual love and attention and give great affection in return. The Donkey Sanctuary therefore operates a successful foster scheme and fosters donkeys in pairs as they are companion animals and bond very closely.

How much land do I need?

A minimum of one acre for two donkeys is required. As donkeys’ feet are very porous, hard standing should be available together with good quality, safe fencing - donkeys are great escape artists and natural hedgerows are not enough!

I have a horse who needs a companion, can you help?

We regret that we do not foster donkeys as companions to horses.

Is stabling necessary?

Access to a shelter or stable is required at all times, as donkeys do not have waterproof coats and also need shade from the sun, together with a constant supply of fresh drinking water.

What costs are involved?

Our foster owners take on the cost of the donkeys including dental care and veterinary costs (routine and exceptional). Ongoing costs include flu vaccinations (annually) and tetanus (bi-annually), worming, annual dental checks, farrier (every 6-8 weeks), insurance, feed and bedding. An approximate cost per donkey per year is £700.

How much time should I commit?

Donkeys should be checked twice a day and your daily routine should include picking out feet, grooming and mucking out the stable. Donkeys love lots of fuss and attention and many enjoy being taken for a walk! The average age of a donkey in the UK is 27, however donkeys can live to over 40 years old and therefore are a long-term commitment.

Where can I learn more about donkey care?

All prospective foster owners must attend one of our free ‘Donkey Care Induction Days’ held throughout the country (open to anyone with an interest in donkeys). Support and advice is always available and you will be visited 3 times a year by an Area Welfare Officer.

Can I choose my donkeys?

The Donkey Sanctuary cannot undertake to satisfy particular requirements such as colour, however every endeavour will be made to match homes and donkeys wherever possible. Each donkey undertakes a thorough medical examination before leaving The Donkey Sanctuary, although some may have on-going problems and need a little extra care and attention.

Will I become the owner?

Donkeys taking part in the fostering scheme remain the property of The Donkey Sanctuary at all times.

How do I apply?

For more information (including our full terms & conditions) and an application form, please call the Welfare Team on 01395 578222.

What happens next?

You will receive a home inspection to ensure your facilities meet our criteria and then attend an induction day. Once accepted you will be put on a waiting list and our aim is to place donkeys within six months of that date.

As our priority is the donkeys, we may at times, not have donkeys to place in homes, but if you are on our “approved” list, we will of course keep you fully informed.

Before making your decision to provide a home for donkeys, you need to discuss this with your veterinary surgeon and contact a farrier in your area to ensure you can obtain their services and for an overview of the costs involved in caring for donkeys.
