How we help donkeys by spreading our expertise

Prevention is better than cure.

There being so many donkeys in the world needing help, we cannot reach them all through providing mobile and static clinics.

In addition to educating owners, we train vets, vet students and animal health assistants within countries, so that they may improve the treatment they give to the donkeys. China is a great example of this, where we are working with veterinary professionals to bring donkey welfare to the forefront.

The Professional Handbook of the Donkey published by the Sanctuary, is sent to vets throughout the world and is generally regarded as the 'bible' of donkey veterinary care.

To help improve the knowledge of donkey owners of basic husbandry, we have various methods of getting the message across. These are tailored to the different countries we are working in and include:

  • talks
  • question and answer discussions
  • demonstrations
  • workshops
  • pictorial displays
  • film showings

Our educational work extends to children and we regularly visit schools, zoos and clubs.

We have developed a children's donkey welfare education programme, that includes puppet shows, talks, cartoon sheets and story books, so children understand more about the basic welfare needs of donkeys.

Reaching children is a very important aspect of our work, as, after all, they are the donkey owners of the future...
