On Friday 27th February 2009 our founder, Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, launched the Sanctuary from Suffering campaign.
To help celebrate the occasion, a special carrot cake was made for the donkeys.
Pictured above (from left to right) are: Jack, Jenny, Jubilee and Susie.
Jack (aged 32), is a brown and white skewbald coloured donkey who came to the Sanctuary in 1985.
Jenny (aged 36) has been at the Sanctuary since 2005.
Jubilee (aged 33) is the newest arrival among the foursome. He joined us in 2007 and is a favourite donkey with our visitors on the Main Yard.
Susie (aged 27) came to live at the Sanctuary in 1996 after her owner, Derek Tangye, passed away. Some of you may have heard of Derek Tangye as he was the author of The Minack Chronicles.

Very Very Cute!!!
The headline says 40th Anniversary but the article doesn't explain that.
Is the year wrong on the launch date given?
I wonder what that cake is made out of.
Looks like there's hay held together by something.
I need that recipe!
Hi Jan
For the full article about the campaign, there's a link in the text below the photo of the donks with their carrot cake. The cake did look good didn't it? The grooms tell me it's a secret recipe of feed mix soaked and shaped then covered with treats, carrots and polo mints. Nothing exciting but very palatable to the donkeys. Only a fibre diet for the donkeys!
Thank you, Jenifer
It's killing me to know that Donkey Week is coming up and I'm an ocean and half a continent away from being there. I'm tempted to ship myself in a container addressed to Sidmouth (don't worry, I am kidding -- well, mostly) ;o)
Hug them for me please -- all 6,000 of them -- more probably, isn't it?
Jan
Oh yes, this is the time when we long-term 'D.Weekers' start counting the days. Get that container ordered at once, Jan, you've just about still got time to be shipped. Jenifer won't have the chance to hug them ALL, I want at least half of them.
Sylvia.
Loved the photo and the mission behind it. What about car stickers to help promote? Just a thought or do you already have - if so how much and can I have one?
Hi Dianne,
There are no plans to have car stickers to mark the Sanctuary from Suffering campaign but pens will be available in the Visitors' Centre.
Congratulations on your 40th Anniversary! Every donkey looks very happy with their piece of carrot cake!
Meg.
