The word "equipoise" was created by the wonderful authors of "Donkey: the Mystique of Equus Asinus", Michael Tobias and Jane Morrison. To me, there is one donkey in particular that embodies this gentle word - Willow. For the month of April I had the great pleasure of gazing at her lovely face and jotting down my scattered thoughts. And so, my feelings and thoughts toward her changed and grew into this verse. Many thanks to the photographer! and her caretakers at the Sanctuary. I hope I have captured her beauty. I would love to hear from anyone who works closely with her. I am humbled once again by all in Devon and beyond. Thinking of you all during Donkey Week. - Jenny B.
Equipoise
If grace brings contentment
Trust, love and prosperity,
Then let me sit under the shade
Of, not a tree but thee,
Fair Willow the Donkey.
Your soul surely holds secrets
And under your gaze
I could sit and,... just sit
Never wobbling a phrase.
I would sing to your years
Under a Donkey's murmuring grove
Learning love in the softness
Of your pussy willow ears.
Your eyes speak of growth
Wisdom coming with sadness
But your brow is delicately phrased
No matter where your nose's planted.
Like the tree you were named for,
For wishing, for dreaming...
I can hear your Bel Canto
A calm voice of smiling, not weeping.
Munching softly like leaves
Stroking the wind, tickling clouds
Listening to birds,
And sheltering others with ease.
You stand quietly, like a star
Like the fragrance of grass
Few things can bend with
Your poise on life's twisted path.
You are enchanted dear Willow
With good mercy for a face
A knowing Mona Lisa smile
With a loving Madonna's grace.
