Ok, I am admitting now that my favorite film of all time is Harvey with James Stewart. I also have coveted (in my Celtic soul) that Pookas do exist. I truly found one at the Sanctuary, and though I will never meet him when I visit there someday, he is with me always in my heart. This poem is a tribute to him.
If Wishes Were Donkeys
If wishes were Donkeys
I'd own quite a few
All different kinds
But only one just like you.
You are my Pooka
Who ever stands by me
Large, white, with big ears
What luck to be mine!
I respect but don't fear you
As you fiddle with Time.
You give good advice
And keep me from danger
I know your long history
And see now why one like you
Was an honored guest in the Manger.
God enjoys a bit of mischief
And His Son a good laugh,
Ever reminding us of benevolence
When obstacles are put in our path.
I'm so glad you're my Pooka
You're welcome to my life's lease,
Appearing here and there
Now and then
To this one and that one
At your own caprice.
A wise and mischievous creature
A Donkey smiling as I lift my head
And say your name ever so softly,
Not Harvey, but Fred.
