This toddler lives on Lamu, an island off the mainland of Kenya, where we have a small, busy clinic where working donkeys and orphaned foals are helped by our caring staff.

This facility is a key part of Lamu life as 2,000 of its inhabitants, donkeys, are pretty much the only form of transport! And when they fall ill or get injured their owners can bring them to our clinic for the treatment they need.

Although he can't verbally vouch for it, two-year old Swaleh certainly showed us how grateful he was when we managed to save his donkey's life.

He absolutely loves this donkey, which is called TB, given to him by his father. He and his family use TB for transport, just like we rely on a car to get from 'A to B'.

This photo was taken when TB was discharged from our clinic having recovered from a painful stomach upset. Swaleh had stayed by his side for the first four hours and insisted on visiting over the next two days.

Without our project on Lamu which also provides care for donkeys on a number of nearby islands donkeys like TB would probably die without any expert intervention. It would have made Swaleh's life even tougher if TB had not survived and is the reason why we must continue to help donkeys on Lamu, and the surrounding islands.

The Sanctuary's PR Office team, Dawn Vincent, Amanda Gordon and Claire Light, have decided to promote the raising of funds towards Lamu's running costs which are £200 per day, throughout 2009. Any donation you can spare, no matter how small, will be gratefully received.
