The program I gave for young adults on donkeys and the Sanctuary was a great success. I had small numbers in attendance but managed to raise $12.00USD for the Sanctuary. The most memorable moments came on Saturday July 18, when we actually got to meet the donkeys. All were in fine form and (of course) Jake stole the attention! His new found relationship with one particular 12 year old was the inspiration for the following poem. I will be doing another presentation for adults at the library at the end of August 2009. Big thank you to Jenifer Tucker, Chris Garrett and all at the Sanctuary. Love to you!
A Boy and A Donkey
There was a boy named Michael
Who met a Donkey named Jake
They spent a morning together
Simply, for happiness sake.
They walked and they talked
As they measured each step
Through the meadow unaware,
Of all the eyes watching
The two of them there.
Remember our time today –
Michael would say
And Jake did answer him
Yes I will -
With a very loud bray!
This boy named Michael
Who met a Donkey named Jake
On a beautiful summer’s day,
Clear as the sky
You could see it was meant
They were not just to be
Fair-weather friends.
They’ll grow old and apart
But still hold in their hearts
A summer’s morning of friendship,
One they’ll treasure for years
Remembering just for this day
There was no time for tears.
