This is a real little treasure. I found this book many years ago and picked it up again this weekend to read.
What's so inspiring about "Travels in a donkey trap" is that it was written by Daisy Baker, who at the age of 76, became the proud owner of a little chocolate brown donkey complete with cart!
It wasn't until Daisy's 78th birthday did she set off for the very first time to explore the countryside around her home in Devon with Darkie.
Throughout the book the years roll away as the donkey cart rolls along and Darkie links Daisy continuously with the old days.
Born on 27th January 1894, Daisy gives us an insight into her life as a young girl as she leads us on a journey not only of time throughout the changing seasons, but also as memories fill her mind while ambling along in her donkey trap.
It contrasts the modern age and speed of today's world and finishes with the innocence of the world seen through the eyes of a four year old's belief that all donkeys kneel and pray on Christmas Eve.
This is definitely a book to look out for in the second hand book shops, or even try AbeBooks.com online.
Daisy Baker also wrote a sequel to this in 1976 called "More travels in a donkey trap" which I've just pulled off the shelf to continue my journey with her and Darkie through the country lanes!
Both these books will take your mind off the pressure of everyday life and make you wish you were stepping out with donkey and trap.
