I have been slowly and steadily collecting a variety of books on Donkeys. I recently came across a book entitled, "The Donkey and the Golden Light", by John and Gill Speirs. It is a feast for the eyes with beautiful illustrations reminiscent of the Book of Kells and, by the author's own admission, the work of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Exquisite in its rendering on every page, I was mesmerized. The story follows "Bethlehem" a donkey foal that was born on the same day, in the same manger as Jesus. You follow Bethlehem through his life and his quest for the "golden light" he saw and felt the night he was born. Ultimately his questions are answered and he is reunited with his friend. A thoughtful, and very donkey paced book, and would be a great learning tool for a child's memory and repetition skills! The images of Bethlehem are hauntingly beautiful. His eyes, in particular are lovingly rendered and are, to me, what I would imagine a unicorn's eyes to be like. It would be a special gift for all ages.
I purchased it used from Amazon Books. It was published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc.
Good to all. - Jenny B.
