A Fugue of Feet

Tagged:

A "fugue" is a contrapuntal composition in which a short melody or phrase (the subject) is introduced by one part and successively taken up by others and developed by the interweaving parts. This poem is dedicated to the stars of Town Barton Farm (the Mules and Donkeys) whose melody I finally put into words. Thank you to the film taker!

A Fugue of Feet

Just above a whisper
You heard them all inside
You could feel the expectation
As the doors were open wide,
And the Mules and Donkeys of Town Barton
Turned out to greet the sky.

If happiness sure has a tune
Baroque in melody
Then graceful hoof notes
From Town Barton Farm
Ran a silent musical reverie

Johann Sebastian would have approved
Of this flowing and steady beat
Weaving accents with flourishing tails and manes
A fluttering garnish to this fugue of feet.

Call it an equine Ode to Joy
Played by the stars of Town Barton Farm
They are the cream of Devon
Sweet Spring wove through their hearts.
