What a difference The Donkey Sanctuary has made to the lives of Laurel and Hardy!
Just over a month ago, they arrived in a terrible state and Laurel’s red-raw bald patch with fur hanging off will forever stay in my memory. They were crawling in lice, skin and bone and just a real sorry state to be in.
But loving care by our experts including Joy who has featured in my video entries, have all worked extremely hard to bring these neglected donkeys back to health.
This picture was taken, this week, of them grazing in their new paddock at Newton Farm, where they continue to be cared for until they are fit enough to return to our main Sanctuary in Sidmouth. I was amazed by it! They look absolutely beautiful, like they have been with us for years. Their coats are shiny, you can hardly see those bony ribs and they are doing what donkeys enjoy the most – grazing away in the sunshine – something they couldn’t enjoy when being shut in a stable 24/7 which is how we found them.
Wonderful; just wonderful. I hope you all agree?

What a marvellous outcome for Laurel and Hardy. I cannot believe how well they are looking. Of course this is all due to the wonderful care and love given to them. thank you so much.
Hear hear. They look great. Happy healthy donkeys bless them. And well done to the lovely staff with their great dedication. God bless you all.
Wow they look like different donkeys - congratulation everyone for the transformation. Is the pony OK as well?
Hi there!
I am pleased to put your mind at rest that Tim is also doing really well. All three have been completely transformed in the last month and a half. Thank you for asking.
I cried when I first saw them on your web site, but am now delighted they are well on their way to full recovery. Well done to all involved.
Astounding! You have done your usual magic :-)
I had been to muck my donkeys out, laid them a nice fluffy bed, put up the hay net, filled up a fresh bucket of water and gave them a ginger biscuit as a little treat. I chatted to them both and we had our usual cuddles, me in the middle and them two squashing me like a sandwich, I'm sure they have a smirk on their face when they do that. I then told them how much I love them, turned off the light and went in. I had a cuppa and opened the mail, one being my newsletter from The Donkey Sanctuary....... my heart sank and I felt sick. The pictures of Laurel & Hardy brought tears to my eyes. There are some cruel and heartless people out there..... I just wanted to say what a fantastic job you have done to bring them back, they look absolutely wonderful. Well done to the member of the public who reported this cruelty and have now saved these animal's lives.
With the wonderful love and care you have given to them they are thriving. Such a sorry sight when they first arrived but just look at them now. Thanks to all at the Donkey Sanctuary for changing their lives around.
