I was out and about yesterday taking photos around the Sanctuary and took a walk by the hospital paddocks where there was a donkey standing quite content with a divot of grass in his mouth... I was intrigued and went to find out more about this donkey called Micky.
Earlier this year, Micky returned from a foster home after his owner's circumstances changed and like all new arrivals, he spent his first six weeks in our Isolation Unit. During this time, he paired up with a donkey called Freddie, who was sadly put to sleep in hospital. So Micky was then put with two other donkeys - Merlin and Figaro.
As Merlin is currently receiving veterinary care having been admitted into hospital at the beginning of September 2009 with an injury to one of his ears, his best friend Figaro joined him as well as their new friend Micky. When donkeys become friends they forge an incredibly strong bond, and here at the Sanctuary we always keep bonded donkeys together for the rest of their lives.
Over the years, Micky has developed a habit of picking up a divot of grass and stands for hours just playing with it! We think that years ago he may have become bored and started looking for something to do, which has now turned into a habit. It causes him no stress whatsoever and appears to be quite relaxed as this short video clip shows.
As soon as Merlin gets the all clear from the vets, Micky will be joining his two new friends back at Brookfield Farm.

Thank you Jenifer for the great video of Micky and his friend. My husband and I sat down and watched after a long day of work and laughed and smiled the rest of the evening! Again, the lovely and much loved Sanctuary Donkeys are pure enchantment. Micky and his friend are equine jewels. They give our lives sparkle and beauty and charm as they reflect the love and care they receive. They give service to the soul. They are the only therapy anyone should need, and I, for one, am fully at their mercy.
All smiles and gratitude,
Jenny B.
That video is fab, not just Mickey, but the other cheeky donkey that comes and takes a hunk of fence, made me chuckle.
I was in the dentist chair and was trying to keep calm whilst my tooth was being drilled . I tried to relax by thinking of Micky and his divot and it worked !!
