Shadow Light

Since I have been in love with Donkeys and the Sanctuary, the Christmas season draws me to them more than ever. But I cannot forget the last conversation with my mom, she made it a point, with focus and effort, to say to my husband and I, "Merry Christmas, Happy New Year - in case I don't see you again." I find comfort in knowing her memory will be represented by candlelight on Dec. 11 at the Sanctuary. This means a great deal to me, thank you. This poem comes out of the season, the Donkeys I love, the Donkeys I've lost, and how my mom realized their humble nobility. A gift she shared. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year to all at the Sanctuary. And to all those who have felt the touch and warmth of shadow light.

Shadow Light

I know I was kissed by your shadow today,
A gentle word
A happy bray,
I know I was kissed by your shadow today.
I remembered you
With purpose, and at cost
Whether a warm silken muzzle
Or the human lips
Of those I've lost.
I know I was kissed by your shadow today.
"Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!...
In case I don't see you again"
With gentle sadness and bowed memory,
I went there again.
Braying music stirred through the air
I so wished that I could stay,
With all the thoughts of your warm touch
I know I was kissed by your shadow today.

Beautiful poem, so moving I was in floods of tears.
