Two beach donkeys from Aberdyfi in mid Wales feature in a new 52-part drama series for nursery children called CEI BACH (Little Quayside) which is currently being aired on S4C every Monday and Friday.

Series creator and producer, Siân Teifi, who has been a loyal supporter of The Donkey Sanctuary for many years, had always wanted to create a series based at the seaside, and when she was finally granted the commission, already knew what one of the storylines would be.

“When I was young, the high spot of any seaside visit would be seeing the donkeys, and I’ve loved these quiet and long-suffering animals ever since,” says Siân. “The series’ main character is a policeman, and the viewers watch daily life at this little seaside village in North Wales whilst learning simple things about the proper way to behave – for example, saying thank you and sorry, treating everyone with respect, not dropping litter, and of course being kind to animals.

“In the climax to series 2, the local animal sanctuary is destined to close, and whilst new homes have been found for the smaller animals, no-one has come forward to offer a home to the two donkeys. A village meeting is called, and it is decided to hold a fête in order to raise enough money to re-home the donkeys, and welcome them to the village as the new beach donkeys of Cei Bach. But, obviously, I can’t divulge any more information – you’ll have to watch the series to find out what happens next!”

Louise Peeters of Mulod Dyfi Donkeys, who was constantly on set with her treasured donkeys, thinks that showing young children how important it is to care for animals is a vital step towards reducing animal cruelty, neglect and abuse. “It was very exciting for the donkeys and I to be involved in this project,” says Louise. “Both Del-Boy and Spot thoroughly enjoyed themselves and behaved impeccably. I am always keen to raise the profile of working donkeys and their welfare; with a target audience of preschool kids, this programme will really hit home with the next generation.”
