Holiday Fun

Come and visit us!

It’s very chilly today and as I walked over to the Main Yard, I was pleased to see a number of visitors, many with children and dogs braving the cold. It’s half term this week and there are fun and interactive holiday workshops going on here at the Sanctuary each day.

I went to the Visitors’ Centre which was very busy to ask where I needed to go and was directed to Box 16 for a "Spring" themed activity session. Here I met Sue, an Education and Activities Assistant, who showed me the various activities. I hadn’t seen Box 16 before and was interested to see what a useful space it was.

A child was making her own felt by rubbing lamb’s wool and a small amount of soapy water between pieces of bubble wrap. I was intrigued to see the finished product, and it looked remarkably felt like as it was hung out to dry.

Among the other activities available were creating a mini Spring garden, doing dot to dot drawings, painting hands and fingers, and searching a small sandpit for buried treasure. There was even a story corner for parents and staff to use with children.

Meanwhile, outside in the Hayloft Paddock, two lovely donkeys, Shirgar and Darragh, were standing placidly while being groomed by a small group of children.

Over the next two days, Thursday 18th and Friday 19th February, the holiday workshops will focus on giving children the opportunity to groom donkeys. These workshops can be found at Shelter 1 immediately on the right as you enter the Sanctuary.

Grooming and walking sessions will be held from 10.30 am to 12.00 pm and from 1.30 pm to 3.00 pm. Sessions cost £2 per person, £1.50 for 2 or more or £5 for a family.
