Helping to protect blind donkeys

Special head protectors

Some of our blind donkeys wear a padded shield on their heads. This head bumper was designed by a member of staff to help prevent our older blind donkeys from banging their heads on the sides of the buildings, gateways or on fencing.

The donkey’s ears fit through the holes and there is a Velcro fastening underneath designed for quick release should a donkey get caught.

The head bumper is made locally and can be fitted inside a fly mask, that has a mesh face and fine netting over the ears, for additional protection in the summer months.

If you are visiting the Sanctuary, our group of blind donkeys can be found along Walk A at Shelter 2.

Donkey health related articles

There have been some most interesting articles this week about welfare: fringes, leggings, head shields and dentistry. It is wonderful to read about the love and care given to the elderly and blind donkeys. There are some ingenious designers at the Sanctuary and the pictures show the recipients of the aids looking contented. Blackie seems so proud of his blue leggings. Thank you, Annie, for keeping us so well informed.
