A free donkey care workshop taking place in Lanark on Saturday 11th September 2010 run by the Sidmouth-based Donkey Sanctuary has places available and is inviting local donkey owners and enthusiasts to come along and spend a day learning more about these amazing animals.
The course is called ‘Your Donkey from Foal to Forty’ and has been touring the UK since April with the next workshop taking place in Scotland on 11th September. The workshops aim to provide up to date information on the care of donkeys from their early years through to their old age.
Donkey care training manager Ben Hart says: “The Donkey Sanctuary is constantly striving to learn more about donkey care and welfare and each year we want to share that information with donkey owners all over the UK. Donkeys can indeed live for donkeys’ years, their requirements for feed and care can alter dramatically during their 40 year or more lifespan.
“Whatever age their donkey is, the whole day will help owners and carers of donkeys understand their requirements and what to do when faced with special problems like poor teeth, failing eyesight or how to give a foal the best possible start in life.”
The day will also cover the management of the donkeys feet, in terms of prevention of common foot problems such as thrush, abscesses and seedy toe which are frequent in the damp UK climate. It will also concentrate on feeding regimes to relieve foot conditions such as laminitis.
There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and meet The Donkey Sanctuary’s Welfare Officers to gain further help and support. For more information or to reserve a place on the free courses, phone The Donkey Sanctuary’s Welfare and Advice Team on 01395 578222.
