This poem is for new Johnny Donkey recently saved in Ireland. Many good years ahead and love.
Dear John (for Johnny)
Dear John,
I regret to inform you
You're to be abandoned
You'll go into Descent
And we who had you in our company,
Will not repent.
When each bough is left bare
For you, a donkey, we'll have not a care
We will not save you
Feed you or bathe you
The bees can befriend you
For all we care.
Silent John stood
Neither reading nor writing
A reply to this letter
Of careless goodbye,
Two years went by...
Silent John lived
Through the moonlight and thought
I cannot reply
But I can make my mark!
I'll live to tell my saddest of tales
Then my owner will know
By chance I was saved.
I'll have friends
And a bath!
A soft bed and new feet
That don't bring me pain,
I'll have plenty to eat.
Oh I hope they can see me
High above them I'll hover
With care and a future
This Donkey has a new lover.
I'll grow old and grow wise
But always I'll play
With all my new friends
Who brought me home to stay.
