If you see a donkey in distress, please contact one of our welfare officers urgently. All calls are strictly confidential.

Our regional welfare officer, Molly Lloyd, played an important role in Pedro's rescue. She had to arrange for the RSPCA, a vet, farrier and the local police to help remove a group of donkeys as she was so concerned about their welfare. One of our lorries from the Sanctuary was seconded to the mission in Wales. The donkeys were taken to the safety of an RSPCA centre as they were not fit enough to travel back to Devon straight away. Unfortunately, another donkey called Maggie never made the journey to Sidmouth; she was gently put to sleep as her severely twisted hooves were causing her so much pain.

Pedro however, has made a good recovery and he is now here in Devon where he can look forward to a lifetime of regular foot trims and expert, loving care. He is a gentle, delightful little donkey and I am so pleased we were there when he needed us.
