Coacalco rubbish dump

Foal in Mexican rubbish dump

I'm not really sure how to explain my day today.....

I was picked up by Omar (vet), Lupita (vet assistant), Pablo (Farrier) who made up one of the mobile teams and Alfredo (vet), Mauro (vet assistant) Marcos (Farrier) and Erika who made up the second team - we have three in total.

It took almost three hours to get through the thick heavy Mexican City traffic to a rubbish dump in Coacalco. Whilst we were travelling, I wondered why on earth anyone would want to do this!!

When we were getting near to the rubbish dump I could hardly believe what I could see. Young tatty donkeys pulling carts heaped with rubbish and emaciated horses. I felt really emotional, started to quiver and had to pull myself together quite quickly in front of the team.

As we got out of the van the first thing I could see was a foal less then a week old tied up to it's mother. I just wanted to bundle them into my arms and take them home. Omar immediately went over to the donkeys and checked them over but thankfully they were in a reasonable condition, nevertheless I still wanted to take them home.

Donkeys and horses continually entered the rubbish dump and the teams were on hand to treat any donkey or horse that was in need of help. I soon forgot the three hour journey and it certainly made me understand why the team had to visit this area.

I feel extremely privileged to have had this opportunity of spending time with such an enthusiastic and dedicated team.
