I was picked up at 7.30 am by Alfredo and his team who drove me up the mountains where the scenery was beautiful and the journey was far more pleasant than yesterday!
Alfredo introduced me to Adolfo who owns a mule which I am going to call 'Sin nombre' (which means "nameless" in Spanish) as he had no name.
Adolfo uses Sin nombre to take wood to the market one hour away in exchange for sugar, soup and soap.
About three months ago Adolfo was walking with Sin nombre when a lorry crashed into them, hitting Sin nombre. The injuries that the donkey received meant that Adolfo was unable to care for him - he then told me that he had to make the heart rendering decision to leave him to die at the side of the road. I couldn't believe what Adolfo was telling me but you could see he had no choice.
Thankfully for Sin nombre, Alfredo and the team were passing later that day and were able to give him the life saving treatment that he needed.
The team managed to track Adolfo and advise him on how to treat Sin nombre's wounds and in just three months his donkey has made a remarkable recovery.
Later today I met Elena who is also part of the Education Team and she took me to meet some of the children that she had met and visited at schools in the communities in the hills.
I met Pascual's teacher who told me that Pascual used to be a rebel and very disruptive in the classroom but now his behaviour has dramatically improved and his grades are much better since Elena has visited his school.
We then went to meet Pascual who seemed quite a shy boy to me. I asked him what he had learnt from Elena at school and he said that you must look after animals by feeding them, giving them water and shelter. Pascuel now helps his father look after their animals without being asked. He's even taught his father not to strike their animals so that they can have a better life!
We were just about to leave when we were asked to stay for food - I was extremely touched as you could see the family had very little money and lived in a garage style building with two rooms. I was even more touched to discover Pascual's father had taken the day off to meet me. It hadn't even crossed my mind to think what an effect I would have on these people….
