Pequeño is part of the family

Pequeño is part of the family

I was picked up this morning by Carlos (vet), Nardia (Carlos' wife who spoke really good English), Carmen (volunteer who is studying to be a vet at the university) and Sally who is our Children's Education Officer and who I have discovered has a wonderful job of putting together educational programmes.

We travelled to Guerrero which took about three hours - I think it takes about three hours to get anywhere in this country!

Anyway again, the scenery was wonderful with lush green mountains in the back ground.

We arrived at 80 year old Alberta's house who has a son called Exiquio. Exiquio has Downs syndrome, not that you would know it.

Alberta uses her donkey called Pequeño to collect wood for the fire and to earn a living.

Alberta picks leaves from palm trees and she sells them in bunches to villagers about one hour away so that they too can earn a living from making fans, rugs and brushes.

Exiquio happily wandered off into the well maintained paddock to fetch Pequeño so that I could meet him. I instantly noticed the wonderful bond between them. Pequeño was the most stunning donkey I had met - he was kept beautifully and his coat was glistening in the sunshine.

Alberta told me that Exiquio liked to handle Pequeño and he will saddle him up ready to carry the palms. She also explained that Exiquio will talk with Pequeño, you could definitely see that they were the best of friends.

Alberta added that a man came to her house one day wanting to buy Pequeño but she simply refused - he's part of the family!

Exiquio told me that Pequeño made him very happy and that he liked to run and play beside him. I felt so at ease - I wanted to stay!

Alberta offered us a cool drink and we chatted and laughed for quite sometime, she then took me inside her house and told me all about her family and showed me pictures of them.

I've decided I am going to send her one of the photos I took - I know it's something she will cherish in her heart…
