Today was the best day ever and I am really pleased with my photos. I was back with Omar today (who I must say has been so patient with me as I've been asking so many questions)!
We went to a village today called Xochimilco which was only about one hour away.
When I arrived there were several donkeys being loaded up with water by children (the children do this chore when they are on school holidays). The donkeys looked in a reasonable condition; in fact Omar told me that about 75% of the donkeys are in good condition which I was so delighted to hear!
I didn't understand why these donkeys should look fit and quite healthy while the ones at Coacalco rubbish dump looked so awful. He explained that the donkeys are not overworked in this area. They are used to collect water and they have a break every other day so they are not continually working.
I met a boy called Raùl who wants to be a vet. He had travelled about 1km with his donkeys and he sat quite comfortably riding them backwards!
Omar, Elena, Josue and myself drove up into the village a bit further so that we could start to set up a puppet show.
About 21 children came to the show which was set up on a small patch of grass. The first thing that I noticed was that all the children were wearing their donkey badges from last week. I was amazed, it actually meant that the children felt part of something.
The show was quite similar to the one that I had seen at Chaputepec Zoo earlier in the week and Elena did the same thing afterwards - she asked the children questions.
One of the first questions she asked was what must you give your donkey? The youngest child in the group, three year old Carlos, shouted out shelter!! I had goose bumps and I asked Omar what his thoughts were to the answer. Omar was just as pleased at me and smiled, the programme is definitely working.
Finally, are the messages getting out there and are the children learning what we teach? Yes, I think they are. Does this mean that the next generation are going to care about donkey welfare? Yes, I believe it does as long as we can keep up the good work!
