Walks around the Sanctuary

A guide containing all the walks around the Sanctuary is available from our Visitors' Centre located in the Main Yard.

Walk A

Central walk

Level: Moderate

Walk A is a stroll around the central part of the Sanctuary (also start of walks F, G and H)

Estimated time: 45 minutes

  • Paved path, grass track and hardcore track
  • Mainly flat, some gentle slopes
  • Suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs
  • Donkey sighting rating - high

Walk B

Russell Garden

Level: For the more energetic

Walk B includes The Russell Garden, Oakley Barn, Oakdown Field, Isolation Areas and the Maze.

Estimated time: 45-60 minutes

  • Mainly bordering hay fields
  • Slightly sloping grass tracks, could be wet/muddy underfoot
  • Not generally suitable for wheelchairs
  • Donkey sighting rating - sparse in parts

Walk C

Level: Moderate

Walk C includes the Maze, poitou group, bad breathers group and donkeys with foot problems.

Estimated time: 45-60 minutes

  • Visit the Poitous
  • Slightly sloping grass tracks
  • Suitable for wheelchairs during the drier months
  • Donkey sighting rating - sparse in parts

Walk D

Donkeys on the hill

Level: Only for the very fit

Walk D is a stroll down to the sea (Weston Beach is often used by naturists).
This is not a walk for the faint hearted!

Estimated time: 1 hour 30 minutes

  • Very steep with stiles and steps down the cliff to the beach.
  • Can be extremely muddy.
  • Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs
  • Donkey sighting rating - low - at the beginning of the walk only

Walk E

The Hermitage

Level: Moderate-Difficult

Walk E includes the Nature Centre, the Hermitage and Quarry. (The Nature Centre is only open during the summer months).

Estimated time: 30 minutes

  • Only for the fit
  • Slopes, stiles, steep steps
  • Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs
  • Donkey sighting rating - low - at the beginning of the walk only

Walk F

Level: Moderate

Walk F includes a walk around Dunscombe Field. and a picnic area (accessible form Walk A)

Estimated time: 45 minutes from the Visitors' Centre

  • Grass Track
  • Memorial Trees
  • Suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs on dry days
  • Access to public footpaths
  • Donkey sighting rating - high whilst on Walk A, a small number of donkeys
    can be seen on Walk F during the summer months

Walk G

Level: Moderate

Walk G includes the Donkey Weekers' field (accessible form Walk A)

Estimated time: 45 minutes from the Visitors' Centre

  • Grass Track
  • Memorial Trees
  • Suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs on dry days
  • Access to public footpaths
  • Donkey sighting rating - high whilst on Walk A, a small number of donkeys
    can be seen on Walk G during the summer months

Walk H

Trow Farm - come and see us!

Level: Moderate

Walk H includes Trow Farm (accessible form Walk A)

Estimated time: 45 minutes from the Visitors' Centre

  • Visit the Trow donkeys viewing area
  • Suitable for pushchairs on dry days, some steps and take care when negotiating the mini-roundabout
  • Donkey sighting rating - high
